Can Vacuum Extraction Cause Birth Injuries?

The state-chartered Maria de los Santos Health Center (MSHC) is facing a lawsuit from a Pennsylvania family because of birth injuries caused by a vacuum extraction. The mother of the injured child claims that hospital negligence caused bodily harm to her child, which has led to permanent, disabling injuries. The charge is medical malpractice.

In 2012, everything seemed to be normal during her pregnancy until 33 weeks gestation, when a routine ultrasound showed that the baby was small for his age.

In June 2012, the mother experienced contractions. Physicians advised the doctor to perform an emergency C-section, but the doctor allegedly ignored the advice and decided to stay with a normal childbirth, but with the use of a vacuum extraction tool. The plaintiff says that she was never informed of the risks involved in vacuum extraction.

After delivery, the baby was diagnosed with shoulder dystocia, a limp upper arm, a fractured right humerus bone, radial nerve damage and a left global brachial plexus injury. Additionally, he failed to respond to stimuli.

What is Brachial Plexus?

One of the most common birth injuries is brachial plexus, also known as neonatal brachial plexus palsy (BPP). The BPP consists of nerve fibers that extend from the spine, through the neck and into the arms. This birth injury is common when the hospital uses excessive force in a delivery. Forceps and vacuum extraction tools have been known to cause BPP.

A child with severe BPP may become partially or fully paralyzed in the damaged arm, which can include loss of sensory or motor functions. The arm can sometimes hang limp.

The lifetime costs of living with BPP can add up considerably, depending on the severity of the condition. If a hospital is at fault for a child’s injuries, then it should be punished. A Miami birth injury attorney is your best bet for securing the compensation needed to take care of your child.

[Did You Know? The first recorded instance of brachial plexus was in 1779.]
