Did You Take Zofran during Pregnancy?

If you were prescribed Zofran during pregnancy, you should be aware that there is ongoing pharmaceutical litigation against the manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline due to several birth injuries purported to stem from the unapproved usage of the drug.

What is Zofran?

Zofran is an anti-nausea drug that is FDA-approved for use by patients undergoing surgical anesthesia or suffering from nausea and vomiting due to cancer treatment. Because it is so powerful, it has also been used for off-label treatment of morning sickness, despite having not been tested for safety during pregnancy.

As a result, several lawsuits have been filed against GlaxoSmithKline. According to the lawsuits, exposure to Zofran has caused a wide variety of birth defects in children. These defects include but are not limited to congenital heart defects, lung defects and physical abnormalities like webbed toes, light sensitivity, hearing loss and facial dysmorphia.

Children suffering from the results of Zofran exposure have been subjected to numerous surgeries and will have to undergo a lifetime of disability as a result of their birth injuries.

The plaintiffs in these cases assert that GlaxoSmithKline marketed Zofran to doctors as a safe and effective treatment for morning sickness during pregnancy. If these allegations are proven, mothers who have been prescribed Zofran during pregnancy may be able to file a claim for compensation from GlaxoSmithKline. In the following weeks, our law firm will continue to discuss Zofran in greater detail.
