Is It Too Late to File a BP Oil Spill Claim?

There is a new deadline for a BP oil spill claim: June 8, 2015. This deadline was extended from April 2014 in recognition of the sheer number of businesses and individuals harmed by the negligent actions of BP in causing the worst environmental disaster in petroleum industry history.

It may be that over half of Pensacola businesses are eligible to file claims for economic loss, but many have not done so. This statistic may be the same throughout much of the coastline area.

If you are able to show losses on your financial statement for at least a three-month period after the oil spill, then you may be eligible to file a claim. For this, you do not have to have a business on the beachfront, as even inland businesses can suffer economically from the spill.

Additionally, old claims that were denied may be able to be refiled, but only if the case had been decided by the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, which has since been shut down.

What Kind of Businesses Can File a Claim?

Most businesses that are not banks, casinos, land developers, insurance companies and BP gas stations can file a claim. This includes but is not limited to hotels, motels, recreational companies for tourists, gas stations, real estate management firms, restaurants, retail outlets, bicycle shops and even law firms are all eligible to file a claim.
