What Is a PTAC AC Unit?

In one of our previous blogs from a week ago, we discussed the dangerous defective LG air conditioning units that are common to hotels, motels and nursing homes.

These units have caught fire, caused smoke or have less dangerously shut down on numerous occasions. Whether the defects have killed, maimed or caused property damage, the negligent company that produced these AC units must be punished.

What Kind of AC Unit Is Defective?

The defective LG AC unit that is the subject of a large class action lawsuit is a PTAC. The acronym is short for a packaged terminal air conditioner. It is classified as an in-the-wall AC device with a heat pump that can both heat and cool an individual room. They look somewhat like an enclosed radiator. They are usually more expensive than through-wall AC units are.

LG’s PTAC units have caused considerable damage and a recall has not been issued. These units are a threat to both commercial and private homes. A hotel or motel fire could sully the reputation of an entire lodging franchise, despite the fault resting on the shoulders of the AC manufacturer.

PTAC units have been known to cause problems in the past. Not too long ago, these AC units were subject to a recall. In 2009, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled close to 30,000 Goodman PTAC units.
