What is Hypoxic-ischemic Encephalopathy?

A birth injury medical malpractice lawsuit was filed on February 13, 2015 against a Michigan hospital for alleged delays in a delivery that may have led to permanent and disabling injuries.

The incident occurred on July 5, 2012. The mother was given Misoprostol to induce labor. A few hours later, there was a possibility of fetal distress. However, a C-section was not performed until hours later.

When the baby was finally born, she did not have a heartbeat or respiration. Eventually, she was resuscitated, but the long-term deprivation of oxygen left her with a condition known as hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

The Tragedy of Hypoxic-ischemic Encephalopathy Births

The story above is a textbook example of a hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy birth. As such, this brain injury is caused by deprivation of oxygen to the brain. This condition is often fatal; however, those who do survive often have considerable brain damage, motor impairment and delays in development. Many people with this birth injury will also have cerebral palsy and seizures.

The lifetime costs of caring for someone with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy can be very expensive. Therefore, if your child’s birth injury was the fault of a medical professional, then you should not have to use your own money to give your child the care they deserve.
