Can Antibiotics Cause Cerebral Palsy?

Research by the University College London and the Farr Institute of Health Informatics Research has published a paper confirming that macrolide antibiotics used during pregnancy may result in cerebral palsy.

What Are Macrolide Antibiotics?

Macrolide antibiotics are sometimes used to combat bacterial infections during pregnancies. These antibiotics are also prescribed if a patient is allergic to penicillin or if the bacterial infection is penicillin-resistant.

Nearly 200,000 expecting mothers were studied in the research mentioned above. Researchers looked specifically for a link between prescribed antibiotics and an increase in cerebral palsy or epilepsy in newborns.

Researchers found a 78 percent increase in the risk for cerebral palsy or epilepsy for those taking macrolide antibiotics as opposed to penicillin.
